Nourish to Thrive

Resistance exercise is a cornerstone of health for women navigating midlife. While cardiovascular exercise certainly supports cardiovascular health, resistance training becomes increasingly critical for addressing the physiological changes unique to this stage of life, particularly the natural decline in muscle mass and bone density.

Here's why incorporating resistance training is so beneficial:

  • Metabolic Optimisation: Muscle tissue is metabolically active, meaning it burns more calories at rest than fat. Resistance training, by building muscle, significantly elevates your resting metabolic rate, aiding in weight management and energy expenditure throughout the day.

  • Skeletal Strength and Protection: Weight-bearing resistance exercises stimulate bone formation, playing a crucial role in maintaining and improving bone density. This is paramount for women in midlife, as it effectively reduces the risk of osteoporosis and subsequent fractures.

  • Sustained Energy and Reduced Fatigue: Resistance training contributes to increased energy levels, combating the fatigue often experienced during midlife. Building muscle improves overall physical function and efficiency, leading to a greater sense of vitality.

  • Mood Regulation and Psychological Well-being: Exercise, particularly resistance training, triggers the release of endorphins, which possess potent mood-enhancing properties. This can significantly improve emotional well-being and boost self-confidence.

  • Enhanced Functional Capacity: Resistance training improves strength, balance, and coordination, all of which are essential for maintaining independence and performing daily activities with ease and confidence.

For those new to resistance training, try starting with a foundation of basic exercises and gradually progressing in weight or resistance as strength increases. Consistency is key, with a minimum of two sessions per week, always prioritising listening to your body and incorporating adequate rest for optimal recovery.
